CASE STUDY:

From 0 to 30 – How to generate traffic and achieve rankings for a brand new website in 30 days!

BACKGROUND

This is the first in a series of snapshots of how Technovate can take a brand new site with no history and make it successful. What we aim to do is:

  • Show you that a brand new website can succeed online
  • Reveal strategies employed by SEO experts
  • Show you how theTechnovate difference can be applied to any site

We've created and posted a brand new site (with no rankings) and will be providing regular updates as to how the site is doing so you can see how it progressively performs (lotsa rankings) over a specific period of time.

This is a similar process to the one we would go through to get your site rankings up.

First, we chose an industry at random that we thought many would be able to understand. An alcohol recipe site allowed us to easily and quickly add information as needed and, more importantly, we chose it because everyone needs a drink at the end of a workday!

CHOOSING THE KEYWORDS

To accomplish this we picked a bunch of words out of a hat and strung them together... Of course, if we went about it that way, we'd never get anywhere. Instead, we use two popular keyword programs called Wordtracker™ and KeywordDiscovery™. The programs track the popularity of keywords used in search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. We then carefully compile the results so that we can compare which words are the most popular, the easiest or the hardest to achieve and, finally, which ones are the most desireable to 'get' for our site.

Keep in mind, there are a lot of ways you can go about selecting your keywords, but at Technovate we find it works best to look at it from a very specific vantage point:

  • The number of searches performed on the keyword
  • The number of indexed pages in Google

In the end, this is the keyword list we came up with…

KeywordDiscovery™ and Wordtracker™ return different results because they pull their information from different sources. In theory, the higher the number the better the keyword but the results should not be taken as the be-all-end-all. In the constantly shifting world of web, they can't possibly be 100% accurate. However, they are an excellent resource for scouting out lucrative keywords for your business.

Based on this information, we registered the domain ALCOHOLIC-DRINK-RECIPES. There’s always a better chance of getting ranked for a keyword if it’s in our URL.


SITE CREATION

We then designed the site that we were going to work with. Here’s what it looks like…

Although having some flash elements in a website design is ok, we decided to make it straight html as this is what search engines read best. Flash sites may look pretty, but search engines can’t stomach them (or read them). It’s like choosing between a muffin and a slab of mud. Which one would you prefer?


CONTENT

We created some simple content that is related to the keywords we chose. We made sure that the keywords are actually in the copy itself to give it a better chance of being picked up. It is important to have the keywords within the text but to make sure they don't look forced. We also created several original content articles that are informative and at the same time keyword rich for search engines.

The ultimate goal of any SEO program is not necessarily to get high rankings but to drive qualified traffic to a website. As of Day 1, here are our stats:
